Apple is set to launch its first smart glasses by the end of 2026. This marked a big step in expanding its product range and improving its artificial intelligence (AI) device portfolio. According to Bloomberg News, the company will begin mass-producing prototypes with overseas suppliers toward the end of this year, aiming for a timely release next year.
This move follows the lukewarm public reception of Apple’s Vision Pro headset, which faced criticism due to its high price and lack of AI features. The new smart glasses are expected to compete directly with Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses, which have gained popularity among consumers. Unlike the Vision Pro’s immersive mixed-reality focus, Apple’s glasses are designed to provide a more everyday, heads-up experience by overlaying digital information onto the physical world in real time.
Insiders reveal that Apple has developed a specialized, power-efficient chip for the glasses. Potentially it is available in two versions, one with augmented reality (AR) capabilities and one without. The device will likely feature lightweight frames, advanced display technology and deep integration with the Apple ecosystem. This includes AI-powered Siri interaction, built-in cameras, microphones and speakers.

In addition to this eyewear project, Apple has discontinued plans for a smartwatch equipped with a built-in camera capable of environmental analysis. It was a device initially targeted for release by 2027. This cancellation reflects a strategic change to focus resources on the smart glasses and AI wearables market.
Apple’s entry into smart glasses represents its most ambitious push into wearable computing since the Vision Pro headset, positioning the company to challenge competitors like Meta and Google in the expanding AI-enabled wearable technology space.
The smart glasses project, usually referred to as “Apple Glass” has been rumored for years, with patents dating back to before 2015. The upcoming release is expected to prioritize a fashionable, approachable design to appeal to everyday users, distinguishing it from bulkier AR headsets. While full AR functionality may not be present at launch, Apple focuses to offer a refined product that balances innovation with practicality.
