During recent times, the quantum computing labs of Google have achieved a great milestone. On December 9, 2024, Google unveiled their new quantum computing chip named Willow. This new quantum computing chip has an ability to perform computing problems in less than 5 minutes. Google claims that only a single chip will process and operate tasks that need a supercomputer’s 10 septillion years or even more than the age of the universe.
This is the huge revolution in the field of technology and Quantum Computing since 2019. In the year 2019, Google claimed that their quantum processor has an ability and potential to solve complex mathematical problems in just 3 minutes. Whereas a supercomputer can take up to 10,000 years to solve. At that time IBM disagreed and denied the claim of Google.
The advancements in quantum computing have also revived the idea of multiverse. It is an idea in quantum mechanics that there are some parallel universes that may exist with our own universe. But why did the concept of multiverse revive all of sudden? This is because the speed of quantum computing matches with the idea that quantum computers can operate calculations in a parallel universe at same time. But this concept remains only a theory. The amazing capabilities of Willow has made it more possible that quantum mechanics has a multiverse dimension.
During the research, the researchers of Google have also discovered a method to minimize the errors. These errors are reduced by Google Calls. The quantum chips developed by Google’s Santa Barbara Lab are powered by 105 qubits. Normal computers use bits 0 or 1 to store and process data. The Willow uses qubits. This is the unit that can exist in several states simultaneously.

Google states that the qubits of their quantum computing are at the risk of error. This is because they have an ability to immediately exchange information and data within their habitat. But the Google researchers have found a way to reduce the errors.
Here is the research of the Google Researchers Team.
For several years, these errors have posed a big roadblock to the scalability of Quantum Computing. This roadblock has been removed with the help of Willow. The Ai team of Google has linked Willow’s qubit that will decrease the error rates and increase the number of qubits. Moreover, the team has explored a way to correct the errors in real time. This is the very important advancement made in quantum computing.
Elon Musk also replied to Google on this feature by just saying “Wow”. The CEO of Google Sundar Pichai also recommended developing a “quantum cluster in space” by utilizing Elon Musk’s Starship rockets. In response to the idea, Elon Musk replied, “That will probably happen”.
Willow is a very real step in the field of quantum computing. Google’s plan is to use Willow in solving complex problems in medicine, artificial intelligence, renewable energy resources etc. Solving these complex problems is beyond the limits and capabilities of classical computers.
