Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, is stepping up its game with a new Grok memory feature. This update brings Grok closer to rivals like ChatGPT and Google Gemini by adding persistent memory, a key tool for smarter, more personal conversations.
Smarter Conversations Through Memory
xAI announced the Grok memory feature on Wednesday night. It allows the chatbot to remember details from past chats with users. If you’ve used Grok enough, it will learn your preferences and give more personalized answers. For example, it can now recall your food choices or content interests when offering recommendations.
Unlike basic chatbots that forget past sessions, Grok now builds a relationship over time.
Catching Up with ChatGPT and Gemini
Memory isn’t new in the AI space. ChatGPT already includes it and can reference full chat histories. Google Gemini also uses memory to customize responses.
With the Grok memory feature, xAI closes the gap. The update shows xAI’s intent to compete with the biggest names in conversational AI.
Transparent and User-Controlled
“Memories are transparent,” Grok’s official X account posted. “You can see exactly what Grok knows and choose what to forget.”
Users stay in control. You can turn memory off in the settings under Data Controls. You can also delete individual memories from Grok’s web interface by tapping the icon below each memory. This option is coming to Android soon.
Where It’s Available
The Grok memory feature is in beta. It’s currently live on Grok.com and on the Grok mobile apps for iOS and Android. However, it’s not available yet in the EU or U.K. due to data regulations.
xAI also plans to bring memory to Grok on X (formerly Twitter), aiming to create a more seamless AI experience across platforms.
