If you’re hoping to get your hands on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, you might want to prepare for a bit of a wait. Nintendo has updated its website to say that, because so many people are interested in buying the new console, they can’t promise delivery by June 5th. Even if you register for early access through Nintendo’s own website, you might not get an invite to buy right away, it could arrive after the official launch date.
Originally, Nintendo said it would begin sending out purchase invitations for the Switch 2 on May 8th through its My Nintendo Store, but not everyone who registers will get access immediately. The company is using a stricter invite system to try and keep the console away from scalpers, so only eligible My Nintendo members can register. That means you’ll likely need to have a purchase history or other qualifying activity with Nintendo.
Nintendo recently made a similar announcement in Japan, and now it looks like US demand is just as high. The company recommends checking with other stores like Best Buy, Target, Walmart, and GameStop if you’re hoping to get one sooner.
However, those retailers haven’t had smooth launches either. Preorders opened at 12AM ET on Thursday, and it’s been a bit chaotic. Some stores sold out within minutes, and others had technical issues. As of now, GameStop is still planning to open online pre orders at 11 AM ET, and it’s currently the only major retailer still listed on Nintendo’s pre order page.

What You Can Do
- Register on the My Nintendo Store: You’ll need an account and probably a purchase history. Keep an eye out for your invitation email after May 8.
- Check with retailers frequently: Inventory may come and go quickly, so refreshing those pages might pay off.
- Be patient: Due to high demand, even if you secure a preorder, there’s a chance it won’t arrive exactly on launch day.
- Avoid scalpers: Prices on resale sites are likely to skyrocket, but waiting a little longer could save you a lot of money.
Nintendo has been known to restock its consoles in waves. If you miss out now, don’t worry, more chances are likely to come in the weeks and months following the official launch.
