Tools for Humanity, co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, introduced a new mobile device at the “At Last” event in San Francisco on Wednesday. This device, called the Orb Mini, is designed to help users distinguish between humans and AI agents on the internet.
How the Orb Mini Works
The Orb Mini looks like a smartphone and has two large sensors on the front to scan a person’s eyeballs. After the scan, the device provides a unique identifier on the blockchain to verify the user as human.
Unlike traditional smartphones, the Orb Mini focuses primarily on human verification. It doesn’t handle calls, apps, or texts, but its portability and compact design make it easier to distribute than the larger Orb devices.
Future Plans for the Orb Mini
The Orb Mini may evolve into a mobile point-of-sale device. Tools for Humanity’s Chief Device Officer, Rich Heley, and former Apple designer Thomas Meyerhoff helped create the device. The company is also exploring the possibility of selling the Orb’s sensor technology to other device makers.
Expansion of World Network in the U.S.
Along with the launch of the Orb Mini, Tools for Humanity is expanding its World Network in the U.S. New storefronts will open in Austin, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, and San Francisco. These locations will let people have their eyeballs scanned as part of the World Human Verification process.
World’s Global Growth
World, formerly known as Worldcoin, claims that 26 million people have signed up for its verification system, with 12 million already verified. The project has seen growth in Latin America, South America, and Asia. The U.S. expansion is a key move to broaden its reach.
Potential Collaboration with OpenAI
A big question remains: Will the World collaborate with OpenAI? It’s still unclear whether the Orb Mini will feature AI capabilities or integrate with OpenAI’s rumored AI device. As the project progresses, there may be more integration between World and OpenAI technologies.
