Google has announced a big partnership with Warby Parker, committing up to $150 million to co-develop AI-powered smart glasses built on its Android XR platform. So far, Google has invested $75 million toward product development and commercialization, with an additional $75 million equity investment contingent on Warby Parker meeting specific milestones. This collaboration was revealed at Google I/O 2025 and marks Google’s first major eyewear partnership leveraging its Gemini AI technology.
The plan is to launch a series of smart glasses products after 2025, featuring multimodal AI capabilities integrated into both prescription and non-prescription lenses. These glasses aim to provide real-time contextual intelligence, hands-free app access, live translation, and task assistance such as messaging, scheduling, navigation, and photography. They will include sensors like cameras, microphones, and speakers and offer private information delivery through optional in-lens displays.
Google’s approach mirrors Meta’s successful strategy with Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, which combine stylish, familiar designs with advanced technology and retail presence. By partnering with Warby Parker, known for its fashionable yet accessible eyewear and strong retail footprint, Google hopes to create smart glasses that consumers will want to wear all day. Warby Parker’s co-CEOs emphasized the importance of blending design, utility, and innovation to enhance daily life through these intelligent eyewear products.
Beyond Warby Parker, Google is also collaborating with other eyewear brands like Gentle Monster and Samsung to expand its Android XR ecosystem, which supports a range of augmented reality and AI-enabled glasses and headsets. This broad partnership strategy highlights Google’s ambition to become a leader in wearable AI technology, competing directly with Meta and other players in the smart glasses market.
Google’s $150 million investment in Warby Parker signals a strong commitment to developing stylish, AI-enhanced smart glasses that integrate seamlessly into everyday life, combining cutting-edge AI with trusted eyewear design and retail expertise. This initiative could redefine how consumers interact with technology through eyewear in the coming years.
